An introduction to Yoga’s sister science.
Ayurveda begins from the idea that we are part of nature, not separate from it.
The same qualities we feel in the world around us also move through our body and mind. Heat and coolness. Dryness and moisture. Movement and stillness. Lightness and heaviness. Ayurveda gives us a language for noticing these qualities and a practical way to respond to them.
In this two-hour introductory workshop, we’ll explore the foundations of Ayurveda and its close relationship with yoga. We’ll introduce the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and look at how these fundamental energies and their qualities show up in the body, mind, and daily life. We’ll explore prakriti, our natural state of balance, and vikruti, the state of imbalance that arises through seasonal changes, lifestyle, and stress. From there, we’ll look at how Ayurveda and yoga work together, using movement, breath, awareness, and daily practices to help us move toward greater balance.
You’ll explore how movement, breath, food, rest, daily rhythm, and the changing seasons can influence how we feel. We’ll also look at how an Ayurvedic perspective can shape yoga practice, helping us understand not only what to practice, but how to practice in a way that brings greater balance.
The workshop will include discussion, gentle yoga, simple self-observation, and practical ideas you can carry into everyday life.
No previous experience with Ayurveda is needed. Just bring your curiosity!
What to expect
This workshop will combine discussion with simple experiential practices. We’ll spend time exploring core Ayurvedic ideas, including the doshas, prakriti, vikruti, the qualities, and the relationship between Ayurveda and yoga.
There will also be yoga asana, breath practices, and opportunities for self-observation so you can begin to notice these concepts in your own body and daily life.
The emphasis will be practical and accessible. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how Ayurveda approaches balance and several simple ways to begin applying these ideas to your yoga practice and everyday routines.
We will sample some yummy, nourishing snacks and ayurvedic herbal teas.
